Trust Me (Four Steps to Authenticity and Charisma).
By: Nick Morgan

Book of the Month

“Every communication is two conversations: the verbal one – the content – and the nonverbal one – the body language.  If the two are aligned, you can be a persuasive, authentic communicator.”    Nick Morgan.

This is a simple book about communicating simply.  You could title it: how to be real.  How to be charismatic and authentic.

The challenge is that we pride ourselves on being able to recognize bad or phony communicators.  However, when it comes to us having to give a presentation, the shoe is on the other foot.  It’s not easy for most people to give a scintillating, magnificent presentation that engages the audience.  And the worst thing is… forcing your authenticity by programming yourself to do things, say things that clearly are not within your comfort zone.

People who are comfortable with their bodies when they communicate are effective communicators.  According to Morgan, “it’s the nonverbal conversation that will make or break you as a communicator.”

Morgan sets out four steps to become a charismatic, authentic communicator:

  1. Be open – be comfortable with approaching your audience.
  2. Be connected – focus on your audience.
  3. Be passionate – show your feelings about your subject.
  4. Listen – discover more about your audience to connect better.

Now maybe you don’t want to be another Obama – but if you do want to connect, Morgan lays out a useful groundwork for doing so.

(Our coach, Joanna Piros, uses these and additional techniques to help you become a better communicator at many different levels.)
