Let’s go way, way back to 1948, when an ABC radio producer named Allen Funt brought his idea for using a hidden camera to film people’s reactions to his pranks to the burgeoning new world of television, where it launched as Candid Camera. It was phenomenally successful, and became part of the culture of the ‘50s and ‘60s. Today, you can say “Smile, you’re on Candid Camera,” and plenty of people will still get the joke.
