Canada’s Womens Hockey Team

Written by Joanna Piros on February 28, 2010

Of course we’re thrilled at the gold medal win by the Canadian women’s hockey team but as I watched the final game it occurred to me that women play hockey differently than do men.  For starters, women don’t get cocky when they have a two goal lead.  They are always there for the rebound in front of the net and seem to never get sloppy at picking up the strays; they pass more.  The men’s team, sitting in a row watching, didn’t even crack a smile as the clock wound down to the inevitable victory: are they feeling even more pressure now that the women are world beating? I’m guessing a big YES.

Fired Up! Community Spirit in 2010 Winter Olympics.

Written by Bruce Rozenhart on February 20, 2010

It’s great to see tens of thousands of people at the three key 2010 Winter Olympic Venue cities — celebrating, having fun and just having a good time making new friends.  All thanks to the world’s top athletic competition.  Downtown Vancouver is a sea of people — day and night – with various country pavillions, entertainment sites and pedestrian-only streets.  Whistler is busting out all over with happy people and entertainment.

Images of Olympic Security

Written by Joanna Piros on February 17, 2010

I had the chance to see Olympic security at work first hand on opening day when a “police incident” was reported on the Seabus in North Vancouver. As you know, Olympic security is all over the Vancouver area now. Turns out someone had left a package at the North Shore terminal and, when it was noticed, the entire Seabus system was locked down, choppers hit the air, and the crowds at both ends of the route were shunted onto shuttles.

Street Food – Who’s Your City?

Written by Maurice Bridge on February 17, 2010

Street food is one of the ways we measure a new city. Like architecture, attitude and transit, it’s a quick indicator of the way people in any given town think and live. If you can’t find decent, interesting and inexpensive food on the street, you have to wonder what else a city lacks.

Book Review: Audacity = Hope

The Audacity to Win
by David Plouffe
Rating: ★★★★★

This is the best “political” book I’ve read in a long time.  It tells a compelling story. It has plots and sub-plots  It’s human.  I learn from it.  And it’s true.
